The Hit Korean Drama Returns for a Second SeasonIn September 2021, Netflix debuted its new Korean drama Squid Game and it became an instant global sensation. The intense survival drama tells the story of hundreds of debt-ridden individuals who compete in a mysterious deadly game of children’s games for the chance to win a massive cash prize. Squid Game drew in viewers around the world for its thrilling story, commentary on modern capitalist society, and shocking twists and turns.

By the end of 2021, Squid Game had become Netflix’s biggest show ever, being watched by 142 million households worldwide. Naturally, fans immediately began clamoring for a second season of the cultural phenomenon. In June 2022, Netflix officially announced that Squid Game would return for a second season. Here’s everything we know so far.

Director and Writer Return

Series creator, writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk will return for the new season, after first conceiving of Squid Game over a decade ago as a film. The huge success of season one has given Hwang the resources to expand his vision and delve deeper into the show’s unique world. He has promised fans that the second season will unveil more details about the operators behind the nefarious survival game.

Main Cast Will Reprise Roles

The main ensemble cast, including breakout star Lee Jung-jae as Gi-hun, are all set to return. This includes Jung Ho-yeon as Sae-byeok, Park Hae-soo as Sang-woo, Wi Ha-Joon as Hwang Jun-ho, Heo Sung-tae as Deok-su, and O Yeong-su as il-nam, the old man. Their comeback ensures that season two will deliver the same captivating characters that we grew to love in season one.

Season 2 Plot Hints

Details about the plot for season 2 are scarce, but Hwang has provided some tidbits about what to expect. In an interview with Vanity Fair, he revealed that the next season will delve into police officer Hwang Jun-ho’s hunt for answers about the game and organizers following his cliffhanger ending in season one. Hwang also disclosed that the sequel will explore the issue of whether true goodness exists among the players amid such desperate times.

Gi-hun’s Revenge?

The season one finale also set up a potential revenge arc for Gi-hun, the winner who vowed to take down the game before boarding a plane to see his young daughter. It’s unclear whether Gi-hun will infiltrate future games or wage a one-man war against the organizers. Hwang plans to explore more of Gi-hun’s backstory leading up to his participation in the deadly tournament.

More Games and New Characters

With the Smiling Man game only just beginning at the end of last season, we can expect more strange and lethal children’s games with higher stakes. Squid Game’s production designer has hinted that the games in season two will blow fans away. Additionally, casting calls have revealed that several new major characters will be introduced, including Cheol, the boyfriend of Young-hee (the giant killer doll).

No Release Date Yet

While fans are eager for the next installment, Netflix has yet to announce an official release date for Squid Game season two. However, Hwang estimates that new episodes likely won’t premiere until late 2024 at the very earliest, given the show’s enormous scale. One thing is for sure—whenever Squid Game returns, the world will be watching. Season one generated massive buzz and countless memes, so expect the internet to explode again when the release date is finally confirmed.
